What Waves CLA Nx Is For

Waves CLA Nx is a headphone monitoring plugin designed to help you produce mixes that translate better to speakers and a wide range of listening systems. While headphones can lead to overemphasizing reverb, artificially widening the stereo image, or misjudging the low end, CLA Nx recreates a "control room" type listening experience with a three-dimensional soundstage. The result: you make more reliable decisions about balance, depth, stereo image, and effect perception, even on the go, in a home studio, or during mobile sessions.

Whether you mix pop, rock, hip-hop, electronic, or densely arranged music, CLA Nx is aimed at users who want a reference environment in their headphones, close to monitor control, without relying on a perfectly acoustically treated room.

Main Features

Chris Lord-Alge's Mix Room in Your Headphones

CLA Nx is based on Waves Nx technology to simulate the acoustics and listening experience of Chris Lord-Alge's Mix LA studio. The plugin generates a 3D sound field that brings headphone listening closer to speaker listening, notably correcting the typical "in your head" stereo impression of headphone monitoring. This makes it easier to evaluate element placement, center cohesion (kick, bass, vocals), and panning behavior.

Three Listening Systems to Validate Translation

To multiply perspectives without leaving your session, CLA Nx offers three listening modes inspired by studio workflow: NS10 for precision and midrange decisions, Ocean Way HR1 for a broader and more "full-range" view, and a Sony boombox for a reality check oriented toward small speakers. This approach speeds up balance choices and limits surprises during control listening on other systems.

EQ Correction for Over 270 Headphones

The plugin includes correction curves tailored to more than 270 headphone models, to achieve a response closer to a reference target and reduce biases specific to each headphone. The announced method relies on the Harman Headphone Target Curve approach, useful for stabilizing the perception of bass, upper midrange, and treble, thus better managing compression, equalization, and effect levels.

Adjustable Ambience, Morphological Calibration, and Head Tracking

You can use the emulation as is or adjust the rendering to achieve a drier or wetter ambience according to your preference and production context. For further refinement, CLA Nx offers a calibration section based on your measurements (head/ear anatomy) to fine-tune the response and 3D effect. Finally, head movement tracking enhances the illusion: when you turn your head, the soundstage reacts as in a control room, which can help better judge depth and localization. Tracking can be done via the computer's camera or with an Nx Head Tracker (sold separately) for maximum accuracy.

A Common Standard for Collaboration

In remote production, one challenge is comparing mixing decisions made on different listening systems. CLA Nx aims to provide a shared reference: by working with the same acoustic simulation and standardized rendering, you and your collaborators gain consistency in balance, space, and translation validations.
