What is Waves Greg Wells PianoCentric for?

Waves Greg Wells PianoCentric is a mixing plugin designed to help piano, keyboards, and keyed instruments find their place in a production without spending hours stacking EQ, compression, saturation, and effects. The piano is often difficult to balance because it occupies a wide frequency and dynamic range: it can mask the vocals, compete with guitars, or conversely disappear as soon as the mix becomes dense. PianoCentric aims for an immediate result: a piano that naturally sits behind the lead or cuts through a pop, rock, urban, or cinematic arrangement.

Beyond acoustic and electric pianos, the processing also works very well on pads, keys, organs, polyphonic synths, and can even provide a solid foundation to full and rich acoustic guitars when they take up too much low-midrange space.

Main Features

The main knob: a continuum of colors

The heart of PianoCentric is a unique control that spans several sonic intentions. Turning it to the right yields a brighter and more percussive sound, designed to emphasize attack and presence so the piano retains its definition in a busy mix. Turning it to the left moves toward darker, more vintage, and more lo-fi textures, as if the piano were captured more raw and intimate, which helps place it further back in the sound image.

Tempo-synced Delay: movement without clutter

Add a tempo-locked Delay to create animation and movement without turning the part into overwhelming pads. This is an effective approach to bring life to a repetitive pattern, thicken a piano accompaniment in a chorus, or highlight melodic responses, all while staying controlled in the mix.

Doubler: width, richness, and diffusion

The Doubler module provides a wider, richer, and more diffuse piano sound. It's ideal when a mono or too-centered piano sounds narrow, or when you want to fill the stereo field without increasing volume. Used subtly, it also helps create a "large grand piano" sensation in a modern pop production.

A plugin designed for automation

PianoCentric shines when you automate the main knob: a darker, intimate verse, a more neutral pre-chorus, then a brighter and more incisive chorus. This workflow is especially useful when the piano changes roles within the track (discreet accompaniment, then rhythmic element or hook).
