Waves L3 Multimaximizer is a mastering plugin designed to increase perceived loudness while preserving musicality. Whereas a broadband limiter can squash the mix and unbalance the spectrum, the L3 allows you to control dynamics by frequency ranges: you can enhance the impact of the low end, stabilize the low-mids, preserve the openness of the highs, and control transients-all with a sense of coherence and control.
It is suitable for both modern masters (pop, hip-hop, EDM) that require loudness and hold, and more organic productions (rock, jazz, film music) where the goal is to gain density without sacrificing breathability. Its approach is also relevant for bus mastering (on a project's master) or stem processing (drums, music, vocals) when you want to lock a specific register without penalizing the rest.
Main Features
Peak Limiting Mixer: a more natural multiband maximization
The L3 is based on proprietary Peak Limiting Mixer technology, designed to avoid the "5 limiters side by side" behavior. The five bands are processed as a whole: attenuation is distributed as needed, which promotes a smoother level increase and often a more natural result than conventional multiband limiting. The outcome: level, definition, and clarity without a "chopped" spectrum sensation.
Adaptive release: from transparent to percussive
The release behavior directly influences energy, punch sensation, and master stability. Thanks to intelligent release algorithms and multiple profiles, you can choose a more subtle signature to preserve micro-dynamics, or conversely a more pronounced response to densify and highlight the attack. The goal remains constant: limiting without introducing pumping, breathing, or audible artifacts.
Linear crossover: precision and spectral fidelity
Linear phase crossovers provide a more transparent band separation, without the typical phase shifts that can blur transients or harden the high spectrum. The result: a cleaner high end, a more stable image, and finer control of critical areas (low-mids, presence, air) during maximization.
Priorities, band separation, and mastering workflow
The L3 helps you define your processing priorities to guide how energy is managed between bands. You can also adjust the separation: strongly isolate registers for surgical control, or reduce isolation so that the energy of one band influences neighboring bands more for a more "glued" and musical result. It is even possible to remove separation to switch to a broadband limiter behavior while retaining the linear phase EQ logic.
IDR: dithering, noise shaping, and resolution reduction
To finalize a master intended for export, the Increased Digital Resolution (IDR) section offers dithering and noise shaping tools. You have 2 dithering options, 3 noise shaping algorithms, and resolution conversion to 16, 18, 20, 22, or 24 bits, allowing you to properly adapt your final file to the desired delivery format.
Simplified versions and low latency
In addition to the full version, the ecosystem also includes an L3 Ultramaximizer version with simplified controls, as well as LL (low-latency) variants designed for contexts where latency must remain minimal, especially in live-friendly mixing.
