What Waves SSL G-Channel Is For
Waves SSL G-Channel is a channel strip plugin designed to speed up mixing while bringing the color and authority of an SSL G-series console. It combines, in a single interface, a musical equalizer, a dynamics section (compression/limiting and expander/gate), and routing designed for quick decisions: cleaning, balancing, thickening, and making a source stand out in the mix.
Ideal for rock, pop, and any music requiring impact and clarity, it excels on vocals (presence, sibilance control via sidechain), snare drum (attack, snap), bass (sustain, roundness), guitars (controlled midrange), and on buses (cohesion). Its "console" approach promotes a finished sound earlier, with settings that "just work" and a contained CPU load to multiply instances in large projects.
Main Features
A Unique Analog EQ: From Velvet to Punch
The SSL G-Channel highlights a characterful equalization based on an Adaptive-Q design: at low gain, the bandwidth is wider for soft and natural tweaks; increasing the gain narrows the curve for more defined sculpting and a more "forward" character. This logic encourages musical equalization that respects the source while allowing cutting when needed to gain impact.
Another signature: the shelves do not settle for a standard slope. They incorporate specific curves with a slight "overshoot" at the shelving point, which helps achieve warmer lows and more defined highs, particularly useful for making a vocal breathe, brightening overheads, or restoring definition to guitars without harshness.
Change Character with One Click
To move quickly without losing creativity, the frequency multiplication/division options radically change the midrange personality: the HMFx3 button multiplies the high-mid frequency by 3, and the LMF/3 button divides the low-mid frequency by 3. Result: you instantly switch to zones that are more "presence," more "boxy," or more "body" without reconfiguring your entire EQ approach, handy for finding the right spot in a dense mix.
"Console" Dynamics: Compressor/Limiter and Expander/Gate
The dynamics section combines a compressor/limiter with a smooth and natural rendering and a precise expander/gate to reduce noise, tighten a take, or accentuate rhythmic impact. The attack is program-sensitive, with a fast attack option to catch a transient more firmly when needed (edgy vocals, punchy bass, incisive snare). The expander/gate is a valuable ally for controlling bleed, cleaning a close-mic track, or giving a drum kit a drier, more controlled feel.
Modular Routing: Pre, Post, or In-Between
One of the strengths of the SSL G-Channel is the freedom to place modules. You can process the signal before compression (for example, filter out and remove a resonance to avoid triggering the compressor), or conversely equalize after dynamics to refine the tone once the source is stabilized. It is also possible to insert dynamics between filters and EQ to build a custom workflow, close to a console approach but with modern flexibility.
Next-Generation Sidechain: Control Without Darkening
The SSL G-Channel extends sidechain possibilities by allowing filters, EQ, or filters and EQ to process the detection signal. This approach enables, for example, reducing a specific resonance that causes pumping compression, de-essing a vocal without a dedicated plugin, preserving high-end brightness when compressing, or keeping bass full by preventing sub-bass from over-triggering gain reduction. The result is often cleaner and more "pro," especially on sources rich in harmonics.
Modeled Components and Controllable Analog Character
This plugin reproduces key elements associated with the G-series sound: new VCAs, Class A operation, distinctive EQ curves, program-dependent dynamics, as well as the typical noise and harmonic distortion (THD) of analog gear. Depending on your aesthetic, you can activate this character to add density and slight texture, or disable it for a more clinical and transparent mix.
Ready-to-Mix Presets, Optimized CPU
With 115 presets designed by renowned producers and engineers (including Chris Lord-Alge, Greg Wells, and Steve Lillywhite), you have effective starting points to speed up your sessions, whether for bright pop vocals, punchy rock drums, or well-framed guitars in the midrange. Finally, its low CPU consumption makes it easy to insert on many tracks, a decisive advantage on "track-heavy" projects.

Questions frequently asked
Is Waves SSL G-Channel compatible with macOS Sonoma and AAX formats?
Compatibility covers macOS Catalina 10.15 through Sonoma 14, as well as VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX formats. The software requires 8 GB of RAM and 16 GB of disk space.
Can sidechaining be used to de-ess a vocal?
The detection signal can be processed by filters, EQ, or a combination of both. This setup notably allows targeting vocal sibilance without a dedicated plugin.
How does the SSL G-Channel Adaptive-Q EQ work?
At low gain settings, bands widen for gentle corrections. When gain increases, the curve narrows for more focused work. The HMFx3 and LMF/3 knobs adjust the high-mid and low-mid frequencies respectively.
Does the compressor have a fast attack suitable for snare?
The dynamics section offers a program-dependent attack and a fast attack option to more firmly catch transients, especially on snare drums.
How many presets are included?
A library of 115 presets is provided, designed notably with Chris Lord-Alge, Greg Wells, and Steve Lillywhite. Noise and harmonic distortion can be enabled or disabled depending on the desired character.
