Essential Information About the Waves SSL G-Equalizer Software
Essential Information About the Waves SSL G-Equalizer Software
- 4-band equalizer inspired by the SSL G Series EQ 292 "pink knob," designed to emphasize character and musical shaping.
- Two parametric bands + two shelves (bass and treble), with high-pass and low-pass filters to neatly frame the spectrum.
- Greater boost/cut range than some historical SSL variants: up to +/-20 dB on the parametrics and +/-17 dB on the shelves.
- Activatable Analogue mode to recover analog noise and harmonic distortion, or deactivatable for a more transparent EQ.

What Waves SSL G-Equalizer Is For
Waves SSL G-Equalizer is an equalization plugin designed to sculpt a source with a pronounced "console" signature, ideal when you want to add character rather than perform surgical correction. It naturally fits into a mixing workflow (vocals, drums, guitars, buses) as well as in group processing to reinforce color and a sense of coherence.
Often placed after a more "detailed" EQ, it excels at making bold decisions: cutting a muddy low-midrange, bringing out the attack of a snare, thickening a vocal, or adding definition to a bus without losing the musical spirit of the signal.
Main Features
The Character of the 292, Designed for Strong Choices
The SSL G-Equalizer is modeled after the rack version of the SSL G 292 EQ. Its behavior is particularly appreciated when you want to "shape": the curve and band response encourage decisive settings while remaining musical on complex sources.
Proportional-Q: Musicality and Control
The Proportional-Q design allows for smoother tonal changes at low gain and more pronounced control when increasing boost or cut. The result: you can perform anything from subtle polishing to more energetic reshaping without unnecessary harshness.
Two Parametric Bands with One-Click Range Switching
The two parametric stages include handy switches to instantly change the working range. The HMFx3 button multiplies the center frequency of the high-mid band by 3, and LMF/3 divides the center frequency of the low-mid band by 3. This approach speeds up workflow: you keep the intent of the setting while instantly switching to a higher or lower spectral area.
"Sweeter" Shelves: Warmer Lows, More Defined Highs
The shelving stages are designed with a subtle response (slight movement before boost or cut) that contributes to a feeling of warmer bass and more intelligible highs. This is especially effective for opening up an overhead, clarifying a vocal, or adding weight to a bass without making it heavy.
Filters and Low-End Control
The plugin includes two high-pass and low-pass filters to quickly frame the extreme low and high ends. The steep high-pass helps lock down the low end to gain cleanliness and headroom, useful on vocals, guitars, room mics, or buses.
Analogue On/Off: Edge or Transparency
Waves models the noise and harmonic distortion associated with the hardware. The Analogue switch allows you to keep this slight edge and analog feel or disable it for a cleaner approach, handy when stacking multiple processes or aiming for a more "clean" equalization.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Waves SSL G-Equalizer compatible with macOS and Windows?
Compatibility includes macOS Catalina 10.15 through Sonoma 14, as well as Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. Installation requires 8 GB of RAM and 16 GB of disk space.
How many EQ bands are available?
The equalizer features 4 bands: 2 parametric and 2 shelving. The parametric bands allow a boost or cut of up to ±20 dB, compared to ±17 dB for the shelving bands.
How do the HMFx3 and LMF/3 switches work?
The HMFx3 switch triples the center frequency of the high-mid band. The LMF/3 divides the center frequency of the low-mid band by 3. These controls enable quick shifting of the operating range of both parametric bands.
Does the SSL G-Equalizer have high-pass and low-pass filters?
Two filters are integrated: a high-pass and a low-pass. The steep high-pass filter helps to limit extreme low frequencies on vocals, guitars, ambient mics, or buses.
Can the plugin's analog coloration be disabled?
The Analogue switch enables or disables the modeling of noise and harmonic distortion associated with the SSL G 292 hardware.
