Summary of This Score

The Polonaises hold a central place in the oeuvre of Frédéric Chopin : both emblematic for their character and rich in writing, making them an essential part of the piano repertoire. This edition offers a broad journey, ranging from youthful pieces suitable for advanced beginner pianists to polonaises fully belonging to the concert literature, where rhythmic power, inner singing, and sound control must combine with elegance.

Designed in the spirit of an Urtext edition, it is based on meticulous comparison work between available sources: autograph manuscripts, copies made by copyists, documents related to engraving, first editions, as well as copies that belonged to Chopin's students and were used in a pedagogical context. The goal is twofold: to provide a reliable text and to highlight the variants and adjustments found from one source to another, in order to illuminate choices of reading and articulation.

A strong point of this publication lies in the attention given to performance indications : fingerings and interpretative notes by Christian Ubber guide the pianist in managing technical passages, voice leading, accent balance, and constructing the "polonaise" character. For certain works, the edition favors as the main source the latest first editions published, which include late revisions and often a more readable presentation for performance.

The famous Polonaise in A major, Op. 40 No. 1 particularly illustrates this approach, as it is presented according to the versions of the German and French first editions. Finally, for some early polonaises, second versions are also included, offering valuable material to understand Chopin's stylistic evolution and refine its piano interpretation.
