A Custom Z Tailored for Modern Jazz, Signed Yamaha
The YSL-891Z embodies the spirit of Yamaha's Custom Z series: performance-oriented instruments designed to meet the demands of the serious jazz trombonist, from clubs to large stages. The collaboration with Andy Martin and Wycliffe Gordon results in a simple philosophy: to offer a tenor trombone capable of being warm, powerful, incisive, or mellow, without ever limiting musical intent.
For Which Musician and Styles?
This Bb tenor trombone is primarily aimed at advanced intermediate to professional musicians seeking an expressive, responsive, and versatile instrument. It excels in jazz (big band, combo, lead, section), but is also very well suited for pop, studio work, and live performance, thanks to its ability to quickly change character via its interchangeable mouthpieces.
Sound and Design
The strength of the YSL-891Z lies in its tonal flexibility. The N.Y. mouthpiece, longer with a large bore, promotes a soft, deep sound and presence capable of "filling" large spaces, with beautiful resonance outdoors. Conversely, the L.A. mouthpiece, shorter with a gentler bore shape, provides a faster response, easier control, and a focused, bright sound, particularly effective for studio and stage performances requiring precision and clarity.
The slide is designed to serve expressiveness: the inner slide of stretched chrome-plated nickel silver ensures durability and alignment, while the outer slide of stretched yellow brass aims for optimal tube consistency, good airtightness, and smooth action. The one-piece bell with axial (lengthwise) soldering, combined with hand hammering, contributes to balance, purity, and projection. Finally, the counterweight has been specifically designed for natural balance during play, appreciated during long sessions.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
The YSL-891Z comes with a Yamaha SL-45C2S mouthpiece and an SLC-891Z case : you have a ready-to-transport and play set right from the start, with no additional purchase necessary to begin.
