Yamaha's "Silent" Philosophy: Tradition, Control, and Versatility
With the Silent Alto, Yamaha translates the demands of lutherie into a format designed for modern practice. The goal is clear: to maintain playing references close to an acoustic viola while providing the comfort of electrification (silent headphone playing, dedicated outputs, quick adaptation to amplification). The result positions itself as a choice instrument for violists who want to effortlessly switch from home practice to stage or recording conditions.
For Which Violist, and in Which Styles?
Thanks to its 16-inch size and immediately familiar ergonomics, this electric viola suits both the intermediate violist seeking a silent practice solution and the advanced musician needing a reliable instrument for stage and studio. It expresses itself particularly well in pop, rock, film music, variety, folk, and electro-acoustic projects, while remaining relevant for classical use when a controlled and reproducible tone is desired.
The Sound
The tonal character relies on a dual piezo pickup system that accurately captures the attack and micro-variations of the bow. This configuration offers high resolution and a wide dynamic range, useful for retaining substance in soft passages and strength in more accented phrases. The "studio-type" electronics are designed to limit background noise, and the instrument features volume control as well as equalization with a switch : practical for adjusting presence, balance, and harmonics depending on the room, playing style, or amplification, with the option to bypass the equalizer if you prefer external processing.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
This Silent Alto comes with headphones and a 9V battery, allowing immediate headphone playing. The frame is reported compatible with most standard chin rests and shoulder rests : you can therefore keep your usual setup if your equipment is standard-sized.
