Summary of This Method
Designed as a foundational text to develop solid listening reflexes, "Training the Ear" gathers ear training exercises intended for beginner to university-level classes, but also perfectly suited for self-study. The goal is to build reliable and transferable auditory skills for your daily practice: to recognize, understand, and anticipate what you hear in order to play with greater freedom. The progression relies on concrete musical activities such as singing, marking the rhythm, naming and analyzing what is perceived, transcribing, reading, and playing, in order to strengthen intonation, rhythmic perception, and understanding of intervals, chords, and melodic movements. Although the orientation particularly addresses the demands of jazz improvisation (reactivity, aural memory, precision in transcription), the content remains relevant for any musician wishing to consolidate their ear and gain confidence. Since 1986, Armen Donelian has taught within the Jazz and Contemporary Music Studies program at The New School in New York, where he directs the ear training curriculum, bringing to this method a proven structure directly derived from practical experience.
