An M30 Rooted in the "Selmer" Tradition of Gypsy Jazz

The M30 incorporates the aesthetic and mechanical codes of Selmer-Maccaferri guitars popularized by Django Reinhardt. Historically, Selmer produced these instruments between approximately 1932 and 1952, following an initial collaboration with luthier Mario Maccaferri. Here, the gypsy jazz DNA is present: steel strings, floating bridge, "mustache" markers, and a slightly arched top designed for projection. The Antique finish enhances the instrument's vintage character.

Who Is It For, and What Styles?

The Altamira M30 is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists seeking an expressive gypsy jazz guitar capable of cutting through the acoustic mix. It excels in gypsy jazz (rhythmic "pompe," sharp choruses) but is also suitable for acoustic variety and contexts where a clear attack and good note-to-note definition are desired. Its long scale length and generous nut width will require some adaptation if you come from a standard folk guitar.

The Sound

The solid European spruce top provides clarity, attack, and excellent dynamics: the essential "snap" for gypsy jazz rhythms is easily achieved while maintaining a wide range of nuances with the pick. The rosewood back and sides enrich the low end and add harmonic complexity, with precise highs and a sense of depth useful for tight chords and jazz voicings. The Selmer-Maccaferri style construction (slightly arched top, floating bridge, and tailpiece) promotes quick projection and immediate response, with a clear and articulated sustain ideal for alternate picking phrases and fast runs.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To get the best out of the gypsy jazz style, thick picks (jazz/gypsy profile) will help regain the typical attack and precision. A tuner (clip-on or pedal) and a guitar stand are also simple and universally compatible choices. Since the instrument is made of solid woods, humidity control (hygrometer + humidification solution) is recommended to preserve stability and sound quality, especially in winter.
