Historical Context and Positioning in the Range
The Ashdown Head of Doom is a bass amp head developed with and for Geezer Butler to meet very specific requirements before Black Sabbath's farewell tour "The End." Handmade at the British Custom Shop, it is based on the ABM platform, considered Ashdown's flagship range, known for its robustness and instantly recognizable sonic identity.
Its positioning is clear: a "signature" head deliberately focused on performance and efficiency, with advanced shaping tools and live-dedicated functions, while retaining the ABM DNA as its backbone (tone, dynamics, reliability, and power).
Who This Amp Is For
This head is designed for bassists who want a classic, powerful, and dense sound, with the ability to switch from a solid clean tone to rich saturation without losing the low end. It suits both experienced musicians and professionals looking for a reference head for rehearsals and especially live performances, where power and visual control become real assets.
Its natural playgrounds include heavy rock, metal, stoner, doom, vintage hard rock, as well as any context requiring ample bass and clear attack (pick, fingers, low tunings). In the studio, it appeals to those who like to finely shape the EQ and capture a mix-ready signal via the DI output.

Questions frequently asked
What power and impedance does the Ashdown HOD-600 Geezer Butler Signature head have?
With 600 W and a minimum impedance of 4 ohms, this head is designed for high-volume use. Two speaker outputs compatible with 6.35 mm jack and Speakon connectors are provided.
What are the Doom and Sub-Harmonic settings used for?
The Doom control increases the current of the 12AX7 tube preamp stage to generate a denser harmonic distortion. The Sub-Harmonic adds an octave below the played notes to enhance the bass. Both functions are part of the 2 built-in effects.
Are the DI output and effects loop present?
Connections include an XLR DI output, a line jack output, and a jack effects loop with send and return at nominal 0 dBu level. A jack tuner output is also available for silent tuning.
Is the footswitch included with the HOD-600?
A footswitch is not included, but a footswitch connection allows control of the EQ, Sub-Harmonic, and Doom functions.
Is this head suitable for doom metal and low tunings?
Handmade at the British Custom Shop, this hybrid head is based on the ABM platform and includes a 9-band EQ. Its specified frequency response of 17 Hz to 30 kHz at -3 dB supports the extended lows sought after in doom, stoner, and metal.
