The S-Cut Series: An Altus Approach Focused on Expression and Concert Playing

The S-Cut series is part of Altus's DNA: offering finely crafted flutes designed to meet the demands of the classical repertoire and ensemble playing. The central element here is the S-Cut headjoint, designed to provide a personal sound and a variety of colors, with a more pronounced breath resistance that helps to "hold" the air column and shape the phrase. This philosophy makes it a particularly coherent flute for contexts where precision, stability, and nuance must remain constant, even at high dynamics.

For Which Musicians and Playing Contexts?

This flute primarily targets advanced flutists, musicians in specialized study programs, and professionals seeking a concert instrument capable of asserting itself without effort. It is perfectly comfortable in orchestras, chamber music, and within wind ensembles, where the balance between projection and control is essential. As a solo instrument, the S-Cut headjoint favors a wide expressive range, sustained pianissimos, and clean attacks, useful both in the classical repertoire and in contemporary programs requiring extended effects.

Sound and Design

The use of a 958 solid silver body (an alloy with a high silver content) contributes to a sensation of resonance and harmonic density, with clear projection and a beautiful presence in the midrange. The handmade Altus headjoint, combined with the S-Cut embouchure, facilitates sound production and vibration, while offering a more pronounced breath resistance: an asset for stabilizing intonation, structuring the sound, and working on clean articulation. Ergonomically, the inline configuration (G keys aligned with the other tone holes) corresponds to a feeling of grip and alignment appreciated by many players. The hollow keys open the door to advanced techniques (glissandi, multiphonic sounds, micro-intervals), while the pointed keywork enhances mechanism stability (more rigid supports on the key rods/arms), contributing to precise and durable mechanics.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To preserve the response and longevity of the flute, plan for a cleaning rod or swab with a lint-free cloth (suitable for all transverse flutes), as well as a flute stand for rehearsals and orchestra use. A tuner-metronome is also useful to fully exploit the A = 442 Hz tuning in collective contexts.
