XO-3: a 2-way B&C Speakers crossover designed for sound reinforcement speakers

The B&C Speakers XO-3 is a passive crossover designed to structure a 2-way speaker around a clear and controlled frequency separation. In a sound system chain, this component plays a central role: it distributes the signal between the driver handling bass/midrange and the tweeter, so that each transducer operates within its comfort zone.

Its positioning is straightforward: to offer a robust and coherent passive filtering solution for applications where full-range amplification (a single amplifier channel) is preferred, while benefiting from a crossover suited to a 2-way architecture.

Who is this passive crossover for and in what applications?

The XO-3 is aimed at speaker manufacturers, integrators, repair workshops, and DIY enthusiasts who design or refurbish 2-way sound reinforcement speakers. It is particularly suitable when you want to maintain a simple wiring and operation setup without resorting to external active filtering or bi-amplification.

It is also relevant for maintenance: when an original crossover is damaged or worn out, replacing the crossover network with a model of comparable characteristics helps restore cleaner band separation, better clarity in the mid-high range, and more consistent protection of the tweeter, provided the system's impedance and architecture are respected.

Key features: band separation, slope, and integration

1.5 kHz crossover for a controlled transition

With a crossover frequency set at 1.5 kHz, the XO-3 targets a transition zone commonly used in 2-way sound reinforcement speakers. The goal is to limit unnecessary stress on the tweeter below its useful range, while avoiding pushing the bass/midrange driver too high, where directivity and breakup can become more noticeable.

12 dB per octave slope: an effective compromise

The specified 12 dB per octave slope on both high-pass and low-pass filters allows for gradual yet effective attenuation of the unwanted frequency band. In practical use, this contributes to a cleaner junction between the two drivers, reducing excessive overlap that can blur intelligibility while maintaining a usable response for many enclosure topologies.

Passive filtering: simple wiring and reliable operation

As a passive crossover, the XO-3 is integrated directly inside the speaker, between the input and the drivers. This approach offers straightforward implementation: no external adjustments to secure, no multi-channel routing, and intuitive operation in the field. It is a favored solution when installation speed, standardization of a speaker fleet, and robustness in live contexts are priorities.

Compact format for clean integration

Its dimensions of 107 x 96 mm facilitate mounting on an internal panel or board, while leaving room for other components (connectors, reinforcements, damping). Careful integration also helps maintain clear wiring and controlled cable lengths, contributing to a speaker that is easier to diagnose and service.
