Summary of This Score

With Kaptara, Guillaume Connesson offers a work for solo flute where imagination guides the musical form. The title refers to the Minoan civilization as it appears in the writings of Mari, and is associated with the idea of a mythical island often linked to Atlantis: a "mystery of the distant" that permeates the listening experience from the very first measures.

The piece opens with an introduction based on the Indian mode Shrî, transposed several times, like a door slightly ajar onto an exotic soundscape. This opening leads to a first dance that gradually gains movement and intensity. In the center, the writing becomes slower and more lyrical, allowing a theme with a very vocal character to unfold, inviting the flutist to carefully shape phrasing, breathing, and line projection. The conclusion takes the form of a second dance, more brilliant and virtuosic, driven by a rhythmic trance that reactivates the initial motif, like a return to the starting point, transformed by the journey.
