Summary of This Score

Pantomimes, for piano four hands and stereo electronic setup, unfolds as an initiatory stroll: the child falls asleep, images begin to move, then nocturnal dreams continuously evolve, populated by fantastic, grotesque, or poetic characters. From one scene to another, the music traverses places that are sometimes luminous, sometimes frightening, and contrasting states ranging from calm to passion, joy to fear, until the gradual return to reality as the dance becomes frenzy.

The work is conceived as a suite of scenes following a pedagogical progression : each section introduces new gestures, textures, and balances, from four-hand listening work to fine management of tempo and energy. Beyond the musical evocation, the "pantomime" dimension is expressed through the implicit staging and the playing techniques required of the performers: some passages call for unconventional uses of the piano (other than keyboard playing), without preparation or artifices, to explore an expanded sonic material still entirely dedicated to the instrument.

The electronic part extends and transforms this universe: it takes up the materials produced by the pianists, develops them, and establishes a precise dialogue with them. The necessary files are provided in several versions (notably with click track for practice, at different speeds, and a quadriphonic version for the concert) and must be triggered exactly when the corresponding symbol appears in the score to ensure synchronization and the dramaturgical impact of each scene.
