Summary of This Method
How to Learn to Read Music
1st Year offers a structured approach to solfège from the very first weeks of learning, combining note reading and rhythmic reading on musical texts in treble and bass clefs. Designed for students in their first year of music theory training, the book is also suitable for beginner pianists who wish to quickly consolidate their reading fundamentals.
The method is organized into two booklets of 28 lessons each : one dedicated to note reading, the other to rhythmic reading. This separation allows each skill to be worked on precisely, while promoting immediate application to musical practice. Preparatory exercises progressively lead to one or more synthesis texts that bring together the new acquisitions from both booklets, designed in close correspondence to reinforce automatic skills.
The musical texts are not only used for sight-reading: they also support genuine work on aural skills and active listening, to develop musical understanding and intonation. The whole constitutes a repertoire of 105 pieces to study, play, sing, memorize, and listen to, in order to firmly anchor fundamental concepts (staff recognition, rhythmic values, coordination of reading and pulse) and gain fluency from the first year.
