Summary of This Score
In November 1778, Mozart stayed in Mannheim and sketched a second oboe concerto in F major, one year after completing his concerto in C major KV 314 (early 1777), the only oboe concerto that has come down to us in its entirety. From this F major project, only an initial tutti followed by the beginning of the solo remain: the exact genesis remains unknown, as does the reason for its abandonment, but the work might be linked to the meeting with Friedrich Ramm, an oboist praised by Mozart for the purity of his sound.
Starting from this point, this score offers a particularly appealing musical reinterpretation: rather than attempting a conjectural reconstruction, the choice was made to shape a coherent concerto by drawing from the richness of Mozart's vocal repertoire. Two arias in F major, originally written for soprano, are thus integrated into the soloist's journey: KV 538 "Ah se il ciel, begnine stelle" and KV 638 "Ma que vi fece", here presented without the initial recitative. Their writing, close to instrumental virtuosity in the same register, offers the oboe ideal material to develop a "cantabile" playing style that is precise, bright, and expressive.
For the central movement, the Andante KV 315 (originally in C major) is lowered by a whole tone to establish a classical tonal relationship around F and B-flat.
