Summary of this score
This concerto for violin and string ensemble explores the notion of reuse, in the way inherited objects are repaired, transformed or embellished to find a new place. Here, this principle takes on a musical dimension: gestures, formulas and compositional ideas drawn from the major violin repertoire are revisited in a personal and contemporary language.
The score draws on deliberately allusive references to several major concertos of the 20th century. Careful listening will reveal evocations of a dark atmosphere inspired by Alban Berg, a lively and luminous movement reminiscent of Sergei Prokofiev, cold and floating textures recalling Jean Sibelius, and a rougher energy in the spirit of Béla Bartók.
Far from direct quotation, these borrowings are integrated into an original musical language that plays with musical memory and the transformation of materials. The solo violin engages in dialogue with the string ensemble through sharply contrasting characters, ranging from expressive lines and driving pulses to unstable harmonic colours and more incisive passages.
The notion of a cycle also structures the work. Certain melodic, rhythmic or harmonic motifs reappear periodically, each time altered by the context, texture or intensity of the musical discourse. This score therefore offers a rich setting for performers wishing to explore a contemporary work shaped by the history of the violin concerto.
