Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The HT ("High Tension") series is one of Blackstar's flagship lines for those seeking tube amp sensations in accessible and practical formats. The HT-1RH MKIII stands as the most compact and easiest to use entry in the HT MKIII family, with a clear focus on home playing and recording: a true tube circuit, versatile voicings, and modern solutions (USB-C, CabRig) for recording or headphone playing without sacrificing amp character.

Who This Amp Is For

The BLACKSTAR HT-1RH MKIII is aimed at guitarists from beginner to advanced who want an inspiring, touch-sensitive amp that can be used at low volume. It's an excellent choice for practicing (silent headphone use), composing, and recording in a home studio via USB-C or line out, offering a wide range from nuanced clean tones to modern drive. Style-wise, it covers pop, blues, classic rock, hard rock, and modern metal very well, thanks to the two overdrive characters and the ISF which adapts midrange placement to your guitar and playing style.

Features and New Additions

This MKIII version retains the HT spirit (simplicity and efficiency) while adding current production-oriented tools. You have two footswitchable channels (Clean and Overdrive), each equipped with a Voice switch to instantly change the core personality: American Clean or British Clean on the clean channel, Classic Overdrive or Modern Overdrive on the drive channel. The ISF acts as a character "pivot" between a more open and tight "US"-style response and a richer midrange "UK"-style curve, particularly useful for making a guitar stand out in a mix or adjusting the feel under your fingers.

The major practical innovation is the integration of CabRig, a DSP speaker simulation based on IR: you select cabinet, microphone, placement, and ambiance configurations via software, then you can store up to 3 presets directly in the amp for quick recall. For recording, the USB-C connection simplifies integration with a computer while providing access to CabRig and editing (including reverb, adjustable in Architect). Finally, the stereo line input allows playing along with an audio source, and the stereo mini-jack headphone output ensures comfortable silent practice.

Sound

The HT-1RH MKIII is an all-tube head in an ultra-compact format, designed to deliver organic tone and dynamic response even at reasonable volume. The Clean channel targets a boutique clean: clear attack, beautiful harmonics, and a headroom before breakup that depends heavily on your pickups' output level (single coils for very airy cleans, humbuckers for a quicker edge-of-breakup). In overdrive, you get a rich and gradual saturation in Classic mode, then a more tight, precise, and modern saturation in Modern mode, ideal for palm-muting and articulated rhythms. ISF is the key tool for placing the sound: moving toward an "American" response often gains clarity and tighter lows, while the "British" side emphasizes more singing mids and a rounder feel. Add CabRig and you get a very credible direct sound on headphones, line out, or USB, perfect for recording without a cabinet while retaining an amp feel.
