Blue Cat Dynamics is designed to control volume, stabilize a performance, and shape the attack of a source, whether in mixing, sound design, or post-production. It adapts equally well to controlling a vocal (leveling, de-essing via filtered side chain), adding punch to drums (parallel compression and transient management), cleaning up a guitar or synth (gate/expander), or managing a bus (limiting, soft clipping, headroom control). Thanks to mid/side processing, it becomes especially effective for tightening the center without crushing the width, or conversely controlling the stereo ambiance of a mix.

Main Features

A complete dynamics engine, from control to coloration

The core of Blue Cat Dynamics combines essential tools of modern dynamic processing: compression, limiting, gate, expansion, and waveshaping. Its dual-threshold system allows fine-tuning behavior based on levels, useful for achieving more musical compression on low passages while maintaining firm control on peaks, or for creative effects blending expansion and limiting. You can also limit the action range via the Depth control to keep a natural sound even with aggressive settings.

Custom envelope detection: continuous Peak/RMS and VCA/Opto

Instead of a simple binary choice, the plug-in offers a continuous transition between Peak and RMS as well as between VCA and Opto. This facilitates precise tuning of the feel: more reactive and incisive for transients (kick, snare, slap), or smoother to smooth out a vocal, bass, or pad. The control of envelope shape and lookahead (when enabled) help capture peaks without unwanted pumping, while maintaining a clear reading of gain movement.

Intelligent filtering and integrated parallel compression

To prevent a kick drum from triggering the entire bus compression, or to target a specific frequency range, Blue Cat Dynamics includes input and side chain filters. Combined with the Dry/Wet control, you get quick-to-set-up parallel compression, ideal for adding density and energy without crushing natural dynamics. It's also an excellent way to achieve more musical ducking by making the detector react only to the useful frequency band.

Stereo, mid/side processing and linking options

The plug-in offers full stereo processing, with mid/side and several channel linking options. You can choose which channels are affected, allowing for example independent control of the center (vocals, bass, kick) from the sides (reverbs, overheads), or maintain a stable image by linking the behavior of both channels when needed.

Output protection: brickwall limiter or clipper

In addition to the main processing, a brickwall limiter or a post-process clipper (with optional lookahead) can secure the output level. This is especially useful to avoid peaks during aggressive compression, or to achieve a firmer and more controlled sound on a drum bus, stem, or highly dynamic source.

Advanced side chain, detailed monitoring, and enhanced automation

Blue Cat Dynamics offers three external side chain modes: via the host's side chain input, via MIDI, or via automation. Monitoring is a strong point: real-time display of dynamic response, envelopes, and gain reduction, with zoom. Key information can be recorded as automation curves to precisely visualize the processing action in your DAW, directly on the timeline.

Configurable interface and studio integration

The interface is fully configurable (zoom, transparency), with preset management, undo/redo, and state copy/paste between instances. The plug-in supports automation and MIDI control (MIDI Learn), and can also send information as automatable parameters or MIDI CC messages to create advanced interactions between plug-ins.
