Buffet Crampon: a benchmark in French clarinets
Renowned for its manufacturing rigor and lutherie tradition, Buffet Crampon holds a unique place in the woodwind world. This D clarinet embodies an approach where mechanical precision, material selection, and consistent assembly aim for a clear objective: to offer a reliable, homogeneous, and expressive instrument capable of meeting the demands of the most discerning musicians while preserving the sonic identity associated with French craftsmanship.
For which musician and repertoire?
The D clarinet is a specialty instrument, particularly appreciated for certain orchestral, classical music, and ensemble repertoires where this key facilitates reading and brightness in the upper register. This model is primarily intended for advanced clarinetists, conservatory students, and professionals seeking reliable intonation at a 442 Hz tuning standard, reassuring keywork, and a clear response in fast passages. Its configuration with a standard E-flat lever and adjustable thumb rest enhances comfort during extended playing sessions.
Sound and design
Grenadilla (Dalbergia Melanoxylon) is chosen for its acoustic qualities: it promotes a rich timbre, good projection, and a sensation of stability in sound production. The poly-cylindrical bore contributes to the balance between ease of play and register homogeneity, while the bell with special bore helps define the low register and coherence of response. Regarding keywork, the nickel silver keys (an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel) are cold-forged, then copper-plated and silver-plated : a choice aimed at combining robustness, precise touch, and durability. The blued steel springs provide smooth and responsive action, and the 100% waterproof pads (GT) enhance sealing, essential for intonation and ease of sound production.
Recommended compatible accessories
To preserve the instrument's sealing and longevity, it is recommended to use a clarinet swab after each session, as well as cork grease for regular maintenance of the tenons. A ligature cover and a thumb rest protector can also improve daily comfort and protection.
