A Modern Reinterpretation of the 70s "Face" Fuzz
The Catalinbread StarCrash is inspired by the 70s silicon fuzzes based on the famous "Face" circuit. The idea is not to clone a vintage circuit identically but to correct its limitations for modern use: Catalinbread removes the Fuzz control (often left maxed by many players) and focuses the experience on two truly musical controls, Bias and Low-Cut. The result: you get the vintage fuzz character with faster dialing-in, better control over the low spectrum, and a wider range of textures.

The StarCrash is aimed at guitarists who want a fuzz pedal with a strong character without getting lost in unnecessary settings. It suits both intermediate and advanced players: plug in, set the Volume, then sculpt the response with Bias and Low-Cut.
Regarding styles, it feels at home in 70s rock, garage, proto-punk, psychedelic, aggressive blues, but also in stoner, doom, and alternative whenever a fuzz that can become more "gated" and incisive is desired. The notable choice is the absence of a Fuzz potentiometer: the fuzz amount is intentionally "in the ideal zone," and perceived gain control is largely done via the guitar's volume and how you attack the strings.
The Bias underpowers the second transistor to transform the playing feel: low, you get a dense, thick, and stable fuzz; as you increase it, the attack tightens, harmonics come forward, and textures become more fragmented and "velcro"-like. The Low-Cut acts as an adjustable high-pass filter from 30 Hz to 500 Hz (3 dB per octave slope): perfect for removing "flub" from big setups, clarifying humbuckers, or conversely maintaining a broader foundation on a clean combo.
The footswitch activates the effect, an LED indicates status, and the bypass is designed to remain transparent when the pedal is off.

The StarCrash offers a raw, lively, and expressive fuzz: a 70s-typed grain, with an attack that can range from "snarling" (rough, biting) to a tighter, more harmonic sound depending on the Bias. Where some silicon fuzzes can become too overwhelming in the lows, the Low-Cut lets you choose your balance: full and thick for massive riffs, or sharper and more focused for cutting leads and precise rhythms.
It responds strongly to right-hand playing and guitar volume: lower the volume knob slightly to clean up and get a tamer crunch, raise it to dive back into a generous fuzz. Increasing the Bias can also shift the pedal toward more "gated" behaviors, very useful for staccato parts, aggressive single-note lines, or more experimental textures.
