A "Type L" Interpretation of the TG DNA, Designed as a Voice in Its Own Right

Developed by Chandler Limited and produced by EMI Abbey Road Studios, the TG Type L continues the "TG" aesthetic: a signature known for its density, presence, and musicality. Rather than a simple scaled-down version, this model incorporates key elements of the classic TG microphone (main circuit, capsule, Dual Tone architecture) while being calibrated to offer its own voicings and a response suited to more varied everyday uses.

This approach positions it as a characterful microphone, capable of recalling familiar TG family traits while offering a more contrasted palette through its two modes. The result: a large cardioid diaphragm that doesn't just aim to "do it all," but to provide a usable color at the source, with quick options to shape the sound without multiplying microphones.

For Whom and For What: A Studio Cardioid Tailored for Modern Recording

The TG Type L is aimed at recording studios, advanced home studios, and sound engineers seeking a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a true choice of personality at the source. For vocals, it allows navigation between a pronounced harmonic presence and a darker, textured tone depending on the selected mode, helping to place a vocal in a mix without over-processing.

On instruments, its cardioid pattern facilitates isolation (booth, untreated room, proximity to other sources) and makes it suitable for acoustic guitar, guitar amp, overheads, controlled room, piano, strings, brass, or percussion. The -10 dB pad is a practical asset when approaching highly dynamic sources, reducing the risk of input saturation and securing the gain structure.

Dual Tone A/B, PAD, and TG Circuit: Uncompromising "Character" Versatility

Dual Tone: Two Input Stages, Two Sonic Attitudes

The heart of the TG Type L is its Dual Tone system offering two distinct characters, "A" and "B." Technically, the mode switch modifies the input stage, going beyond simple EQ: it delivers two behaviors, two ways of handling transients and developing harmonics.

Mode "A" emphasizes an advanced TG midrange rendering, dense and rich in harmonics, ideal for adding presence, attack, and a "finished" feel right at the source. Mode "B" leans towards a ribbon-like character, with sharper contrast and different texture, very useful to tame a bright source, thicken a take, or provide an immediate alternative without changing microphones.

PAD -10 dB: Handling High Sound Pressure Levels with More Headroom

The TG Type L is designed to cover delicate as well as high-level sources. With the -10 dB PAD engaged, both "A" and "B" modes gain headroom on loud takes. Mode "B" with PAD is even presented as the Type L's extreme SPL mode, particularly relevant when seeking a more solid and controlled sound at very high levels (powerful amps, close percussion, close brass), while retaining a marked sonic imprint.

A Large Diaphragm Cardioid FET with TG Temperament

With its large-diaphragm capsule, cardioid pattern, and TG transistor (FET) circuit, the TG Type L combines precision, stability, and character. +48 V phantom power simplifies integration into a standard studio setup (mic preamp, console, audio interface), with no external power supply needed. To get the best from its two modes, it's particularly effective to do quick tests at the same position (mode A then mode B), then adjust gain and distance: this way, you choose the voicing that "mixes" best even before opening an EQ.
