Historical Context and Positioning in the Range
The plastic head has established itself as a practical alternative to natural skins for Brazilian percussion, thanks to its manufacturing consistency and durability. This type of head is often chosen as a reliable solution for group use (batucada) and outdoor performances, where consistency and longevity are priorities.
Target Audience for This Drum/Instrument
This head is suitable for beginner and intermediate surdo players seeking a durable and easy-to-tune solution. It is particularly aimed at "samba," batucada, and street music styles, where a clear strike, strong projection, and good long-term stability are desired.
Features and Innovations
Designed for an 18-inch surdo, this plastic head offers quick setup and a consistent response across the entire surface. Its design ensures even tension, facilitating tuning and minimizing variations caused by humidity-a key point for rehearsals, carnivals, and travel.
Sound Characteristics
A plastic head emphasizes a more pronounced attack and a "straighter" sound than a natural skin, with a more consistent rebound feel. On a surdo, this translates to a well-present bass presence, enhanced definition of the mallet strike, and effective projection within a percussion ensemble.
