A "substitution box" approach designed for audio electronics prototyping

A substitution box is a design tool that allows you to quickly compare values or types of components in a circuit while you listen and measure the result in real time. In the world of musical DIY (effect pedals, mods, small audio builds), this type of tool quickly becomes indispensable whenever a component influences output level, dynamics, noise, headroom, or tone. The Coppersound Substitution Box Transistor focuses on one of the most critical choices for a circuit's character: the transistor.

Note: the "Substitution Box" series is also available in other versions (resistors, film capacitors, ceramic capacitors, electrolytic capacitors, diodes), allowing you to maintain the same workflow logic across the entire prototyping chain, from fine-tuning a filter to selecting a clipping component.

Who is the Coppersound Substitution Box Transistor for, and when to use it?

This substitution box is aimed at pedal designers, DIY enthusiasts, technicians, and anyone prototyping on breadboards (or wanting to validate a transistor choice before integrating it onto a PCB). It is particularly useful when you want to compare behaviors rather than just "values": sharper attack, smoother saturation, more pronounced gate, better stability, or even better-controlled background noise depending on the transistor type selected.

In practice, it saves you time on back-and-forths: instead of removing a transistor, bending leads, checking connections, and repeating, you switch from one option to another immediately. The result: you listen more, measure faster, and make more reliable decisions based on consistent tests.

Key features: compare transistors in real conditions without interrupting your session

The Substitution Box Transistor is designed to make experimentation seamless: you connect the box to the circuit points to be tested, then select different transistor references to observe variations in gain, response, and behavior. This is a real advantage for circuits where component choice changes the playing feel, such as fuzz pedals, certain boosts, or sensitive input stages.

A selection focused on DIY audio

This version includes several families of transistors commonly encountered in audio design: BJT, JFET, and N-channel MOSFET. This allows you to compare different topologies and signatures and quickly identify what best serves your goal (transparency, coloration, compression, guitar volume response, etc.).

Assembled, so you can focus on sound and measurement

Each model is delivered fully assembled. This avoids wiring or assembly errors that often skew comparisons, letting you get straight to the point: testing, listening, measuring, iterating.
