A Pedal Designed Like a Studio Compressor... in Pedalboard Format
With the Hyper Luminal, Darkglass pushes its concept of a "studio pedal" far: the audio remains on an analog circuit, while the detection and control (side chain) section relies on digital modeling. The result: you get very musical compression sensations inspired by great references, but with modern ergonomics. The BUS mode evokes the "glue" approach of bus compressors, the FET mode targets a faster, sharper response, and the SYM mode carries the spirit of the Darkglass Super Symmetry (discontinued model) for those who prefer a more Darkglass-typical compression.
Who Is the Hyper Luminal For, and In What Contexts Does It Make a Difference?
This compressor pedal is aimed both at the demanding bassist who wants to secure their level live and the studio musician seeking fine control of attack and controlled note sustain. In funk, you can enhance the "snap" without squashing the playing thanks to the blend (parallel compression). In rock and metal, it helps stabilize the low end and place the bass "in front" of the mix, especially with a fast attack and higher ratio. In pop, gospel, or session work, the Hyper Luminal is ideal for achieving a clean, consistent sound ready to record while maintaining a lively playing feel.
On a pedalboard, it naturally sits early in the chain (just after the tuner) to control dynamics before distortion, or after an overdrive if you want to smooth a more aggressive tone. Its internal headroom reserve and hybrid design also make it an excellent choice for active basses and high output levels.
Controls, Modes, and Settings: Modern Compression Without Unnecessary Complexity
The Hyper Luminal focuses on essentials with immediate, musical controls. The Compression knob sets the amount of compression and also affects internal make-up gain, useful for maintaining a "constant level" feel. The Time control adjusts time constants (attack and release) to switch from tight, percussive clamping to a softer, more breathing behavior. With Blend, you mix the compressed and dry signals for transparent parallel compression, very effective for preserving attack and natural tone. Finally, Level (output) adjusts the overall volume, from simple balancing to a clean boost.
The choice of ratio and mode is made via capacitive touch sensors that detect contact on the enclosure: no mechanical selector to handle, and quick selection when you're on stage. Available ratios depend on the mode (for example, BUS mode offers "glue"-oriented ratios, FET mode goes up to an especially energetic "ALL IN" behavior), helping you quickly find a setting range consistent with the chosen character. Additionally, the USB connection and Darkglass Suite editor allow deeper customization (fine-tuning timings, side chain settings, options, and updates), while keeping usage simple if you prefer just turning two knobs and playing.
Sound Signature
The Hyper Luminal's signature is a clean, precise, and highly controllable compression that can remain almost invisible or become a true character tool depending on the mode. In BUS, you easily get that "glued" bass-to-the-mix feel, more homogeneous, ideal for pick lines, steady octaves, and grooves that need to stay stable. In FET, the response is livelier: the attack can be tight, sustain enhanced, and the bass gains presence, perfect for modern contexts where punch and firm articulation are sought. In SYM, you find a more "Darkglass" behavior: compression that can be more marked and musical, very useful for adding weight to the low end.
Thanks to the blend and the gain reduction meter, you can preserve playing dynamics (slap, ghost notes, finger nuances) while controlling peaks: the pedal reacts well to right-hand variations and level differences between strings, making it an excellent bass compressor pedal for both studio and stage.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Darkglass Hyper Luminal suitable for an active bass?
The analog audio path has a headroom reserve adapted for high output levels. The 1 Megaohm input impedance allows connection via a 6.35 mm jack.
What compression modes are available?
The three modes BUS, FET, and SYM offer distinct behaviors. The BUS mode provides ratios of 2:1, 4:1, 10:1, and 15:1. The FET mode includes 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 20:1, and ALL IN, while SYM relies on Super Symmetry settings.
Is it possible to preserve the attack with this compressor pedal?
Thanks to the Blend potentiometer, it is possible to mix dry and compressed signals to apply parallel compression.
How to adjust the modes and visualize the compression?
The ratio and mode are selected with touch-through-metal sensors. A 10-LED gain reduction meter displays the compression action.
What power supply is needed for the Hyper Luminal?
A regulated 9 V DC power supply with negative center and 5.5 x 2.1 mm barrel plug is required. Consumption is 250 mA, and no battery operation is planned.
