This publication is part of a decisive musical adventure: the preservation of a repertoire that, without systematic collection, might have disappeared. It all began in July 1792, in Belfast, when the young Edward Bunting, then 19 years old, was tasked with notating the tunes performed at a gathering of traditional harpists. This work, initiated almost innocently, triggered a long movement to preserve Irish melodies over nearly a century.
Over time, Edward Bunting passed on his legacy to his apprentice George Petrie, a central figure in the collection. Petrie played a key role in the creation of the Society for the Preservation and Publication of the Melodies of Ireland, which published its first collection in 1855. The story then continues up to Sir Charles Stanford, to whom Petrie's daughter entrusted three bound volumes of her father's work, paving the way for the ultimate compilation published in 1905.
