Summary of This Score
This volume brings together a particularly rich collection of preludes and études for piano, from the earliest pieces (op. 2) to later collections. On the preludes side, it notably includes the 24 Preludes op. 11, organized into four parts, as well as a succession of emblematic cycles and series: Six Preludes op. 13, Five Preludes op. 15 and op. 16, Seven Preludes op. 17, followed by shorter groups (op. 22, 27, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 48, 67, 74) and several isolated numbers (op. 9 for the left hand, op. 45, op. 49, op. 51, op. 56, op. 59).
The études section completes the collection with op. 2 no. 1, the 12 Études op. 8 (in two parts), the 8 Études op. 42, as well as complementary études (op. 49, op. 56, and Three Études op. 65). The whole constitutes a prime material for developing solid piano technique while exploring expressive miniatures: passagework, chords, dense textures, dynamic contrasts, and tone color work. An ideal selection for building a program, supporting daily practice, or deepening an aesthetic where the short form concentrates great musical intensity.
