A Modernized "Classic": The Evolution from the 4011 to the 4011A

The DPA 4011A follows in the footsteps of the 4011, which has become an essential reference for demanding sound capture. This improved version features carefully selected high-end components, with a clear goal: to deliver even more faithful reproduction, exemplary neutrality, and extremely reduced distortion. The result is a "transparent" microphone that respects the source while maintaining the musicality and coherence that have built the series' reputation.

For Whom and For What Uses? A Close-Miking Microphone Also Comfortable as a Spot Mic

The 4011A is designed for sound engineers, studios, live control rooms, and musicians seeking a precise cardioid microphone capable of capturing the finest nuances without coloration. In close-miking, it excels on acoustic guitar and grand piano, as well as on drum overheads, percussion, and wind instruments. As a spot mic, its top-tier cardioid pattern facilitates placement within dense ensembles, up to the symphony orchestra, maintaining a stable image and natural sound.

Its ability to handle very high sound pressure levels also makes it a safe choice when moving from delicate sessions (strings, vocals, ambience) to more energetic sources (brass, percussion, dynamic overheads) without changing microphones.

Precision, Phase, and Level Control: The Strengths of the 4011A

A Consistent Cardioid for Clean Separation

The main asset of the 4011A is the stability of its cardioid polar pattern. This consistency helps isolate a source in a busy environment while maintaining timbral coherence during movements or placement variations. In practice, this results in clearer recordings, particularly useful in multi-mic setups or ensemble spot miking.

Linear Frequency Response and Controlled Phase

Thanks to a linear on-axis frequency response and excellent phase consistency, the 4011A aims to reproduce sound as close to the original as possible. Its off-axis behavior is also consistent: any leakage from other instruments retains a natural character, facilitating integration into a mix and enhancing the realistic spatial sensation.

Integrated -20 dB Pad: More Headroom, Less Constraints

The 4011A features an integrated -20 dB attenuator (Pad) with a switch located at the center of the XLR connector. This pad allows for reducing the microphone's output level to preserve the headroom of your preamp or console input stage, securing recordings on very loud sources without sacrificing definition.
