From Limited Edition to Classic Heavy Tone

Originally designed as a limited edition, the Acapulco Gold became a permanent model due to overwhelming demand. Its original circuit does not aim to reproduce a classic "preamp" distortion: here, the idea is to capture the saturation of a power amp, with that dense grain, natural compression, and volume reserve typical of a Sunn Model T when pushed to the max.

The result: a pedal with a strong character, designed for sounds that fill the space, from monolithic riffs to guitar walls, while remaining surprisingly lively under the fingers.

For Which Guitarists and Styles?

The Acapulco Gold is aimed at musicians who want a simple and inspiring guitar distortion pedal capable of turning a clean amp into a riff machine. It excels in rock, stoner, doom, noise rock, punk, and all aesthetics seeking a massive yet organic drive.

In the studio, it fits easily into a mix thanks to its "amp" feel and playing response. Live, it is perfect on a minimalist pedalboard: you set your base volume on the pedal, then control the saturation level with your guitar's volume knob.

Controls, Switching, and Design

The approach is deliberately straightforward: a single potentiometer (large format) controls the output level and the amount of "push" sent to your amp. This simplicity is precisely its strength: you find your sweet spot in seconds, then sculpt the rest with your right hand and guitar controls.

The V2 (late 2016) features a silent relay switch, designed to minimize unwanted noise when activating. The pedal is advertised as true bypass, preserving the signal when the effect is off.

The Sound

Expect a thick, harmonically rich distortion, with an attack that remains clear when playing hard, and a very "amp-like" feel when letting chords breathe. The Acapulco Gold reacts heavily to your guitar's volume : at very low volume, the sound becomes drier and snappier like a nervous rhythm; just below max, you get a fleshy, expressive overdrive ; at full volume, it's an explosion, like a Model T on the edge of breaking down.

Regarding inspirations and uses, this pedal is found in genres ranging from alternative and noise rock to heavier, saturated textures; it is notably associated with guitarists known for their radical and dynamic tones such as Lee Ranaldo, Steve Albini, and Chelsea Wolfe.
