A "plug and play" octave up derived from the Hoof Reaper
The Tentacle features the analog upper octave that contributed to the explosive character of the Hoof Reaper. Compared to more complex octavers, EarthQuaker Devices made a radical choice here: no controls. This "one trick pony" philosophy delivers a clear promise: instantly achieve a snappy octave up, ready to transform a riff into a psychedelic lead or to thicken a fuzz with harmonics that jump out at you.
Who is the Tentacle for, and in which styles does it make a difference?
The Tentacle is aimed at guitarists who want a strong color without spending time tweaking. Perfect for rock, garage, stoner, psychedelic, but also for bolder ambient textures, it fits equally well in studio and live settings: one flick of the switch and the spectrum opens up. It particularly shines with expressive playing (vibrato, bends, sharp attacks) and quickly becomes addictive for bringing out a melody in a dense mix.
Playing tip: for a more pronounced effect, favor the neck pickup and explore phrases above the 12th fret. This is often where the octave up "sings" with the most precision and brilliance.

Questions frequently asked
EarthQuaker Tentacle V2: Are there level or tone controls?
This pedal has no level, tone, or blend controls: the analog octave up is activated directly by the footswitch.
What power supply is required for the Tentacle?
The required power supply is 9 V DC, center negative, via a 2.1 mm connector. The current draw is 10 mA and no higher voltage should be used.
How does the Tentacle's momentary mode work?
The relay Flexi-Switch offers a latching mode for classic on/off activation. In momentary mode, the effect remains active only while the footswitch is held. Releasing immediately returns the pedal to bypass.
Does the Tentacle perform better with certain guitar settings?
The octave up is more pronounced with the neck pickup and phrases played above the 12th fret. Sharp attacks, vibrato, and bends enhance its harmonics.
Where should this octave pedal be placed in a pedalboard with fuzz?
Placing it before a fuzz or overdrive emphasizes the cutting harmonics and vintage octave color. The input impedance is 100 kOhms, while the output impedance is under 1 kOhm.
