A modern archtop in the spirit of great stage guitars
The El Rey 1 follows the tradition of electric archtops designed for both pick and fingerstyle playing, featuring an "Otto D'Ambrosio Signature Design" that emphasizes ergonomics, clarity, and elegance. Its 14" size prioritizes maneuverability without sacrificing the typical character of jazz bodies.
For whom, and for which styles?
This guitar is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists seeking an expressive, precise, and inspiring instrument. It excels in jazz, blues, swing, chord melody, and soft accompaniment, while remaining very comfortable for more modern sounds as long as dynamics and touch are prioritized.
The sound
The combination of a solid spruce top and solid mahogany back/sides offers an interesting balance: attack, definition, and beautiful articulation in the highs, supported by warm mids and a rounded low end. The archtop format favors a quick response and precise projection, ideal for voicings and melodic lines.
The Kent Armstrong HPAG-1G neck pickup emphasizes full, rich, and smooth tones, particularly suited to jazz and blues sounds. The electronics (500K AudioTaper potentiometers and 0.047 uF capacitor) help maintain clarity while allowing the tone to be rounded off for softer textures.
Recommended compatible accessories
The guitar comes factory-strung with D'Addario NYXL .012 - .052, and you can keep this gauge to retain the intended feel, tension, and tonal balance (replacement with a .012 - .052 set is recommended). Since it is delivered in a case, no additional case is necessary.
