A tube preamp designed for bass, at the heart of an "amp" approach

The Valvedrive DI follows the tradition of sought-after tube saturations by bassists: an organic drive, rich in harmonics, that respects the fundamental and retains body in the low end. The idea is not just to add distortion, but to transform the behavior of your signal as a real preamp stage would: more definition, a livelier attack, and a presence that naturally sits in the mix.

With its two voicings, Vintage and Modern, it allows you to switch from a rounder, "old school" character to a more direct and incisive response, useful for contemporary sounds and pick playing.

For which bassists? From minimalist pedalboards to pro setups with consoles

This pedal is aimed at bassists who want an all-in-one solution: a true tube tone, simple and musical EQ, and an immediately usable DI output. In rehearsal and on stage, the symmetrical XLR output with speaker simulation makes working with the front of house easier: you can send a coherent signal to the sound engineer while keeping your 6.35mm Jack output to your amp.

It suits both intermediate and advanced players: the controls remain intuitive (Gain, Volume, 3-band EQ), but the dynamics of a tube reward playing nuances. Style-wise, it covers a wide range: blues and soul for subtle warmth, rock and stoner for a thick tone, punk and metal for more aggressive saturation in Modern mode, and even grittier textures for the studio.

Controls, modes, and connectivity: a true preamp + DI chain

The Valvedrive DI combines a saturation section and a passive EQ with Bass, Middle, and Treble to shape the spectrum naturally, without making the sound artificial. The Gain / Volume duo lets you choose your approach: low Gain and higher Volume to warm up and "push" your amp's input, or higher Gain to enter a dense overdrive, then more pronounced distortion.

Two footswitches simplify stage use: Bypass to activate or cut the effect (true bypass) and Mode to switch between Vintage and Modern. To adapt to different instruments, the pedal also includes a -10 dB Pad (useful with active basses with high output levels) and a ground lift switch to reduce hum when using the XLR DI to a console.

Regarding connections, you'll find the essentials for a pro pedalboard: 6.35mm Jack input, 6.35mm Jack output to amp/monitor, and symmetrical XLR output for front of house or recording, with a speaker simulation designed for a more "mix-ready" integration.

The Sound

The sonic signature of the Valvedrive DI is a tube drive that remains full and coherent in the low end: the fundamental keeps its foundation while the harmonics add a very musical presence. At light settings, it adds immediate warmth, a slight "bloom" on notes, and a sense of depth that enhances both fingerstyle and pick playing.

When you increase the Gain, the tone becomes thicker and rougher, with saturation that can reach high gain without completely squashing the signal. The pedal responds well to touch: playing softer preserves definition, and playing harder, the tube returns a natural bite. Artists like Jónsi, Georg Holm, and Chris Chaney are associated with this type of Valvedrive DI, illustrating its "studio and stage" positioning for expressive and assertive bass tones.
