This score offers a diminution on "Madonna mia gentil," an emblematic madrigal from the Primo Libro de Madrigali a cinque voci (Venice, 1580) by Luca Marenzio (1553-1599). A central composer of the late Renaissance, Marenzio served in Rome for cardinals, then in Florence at the Medici court (notably during the intermedi of the "Pellegrina" in 1589), before returning to Rome where he died. His work, especially his madrigal books which were widely reprinted, has had a strong influence on posterity.
The ornamented version presented here is by Giovanni Bassano (1560/1561-1617). It comes from a large compilation of motets, madrigals, and songs "diminuted" intended to be played with all kinds of instruments or even with voice alone, published in Venice by Giacomo Vincenti in 1591. This source is now only known through a manuscript copy made by musicologist Friedrich Chrysander in 1890, as the original preserved in Berlin was destroyed during World War II.
An influential performer and pedagogue, Bassano was first "piffaro" of the Doge from 1576, then succeeded Girolamo Dalla Casa in 1601 at the Basilica San Marco in Venice, a position he held until his death. Besides the 1591 work, he is notably responsible for major collections for instrumentalists (including Ricercate, passaggi et cadenze, 1585), and his influence on Giovanni Gabrieli is documented. This edition, presented in the Pierre Boragno collection, thus offers a particularly relevant piece for working on Venetian style, measured virtuosity, and the art of variation within a historically documented musical framework.
