A "deluxe" approach to the rotary speaker, blending tradition and modern pedal design

The sound of a rotary speaker has a little miracle: a 3D movement, a natural Doppler effect, and that unique mix between rotating bass and horn treble that instantly gives an "organ-like" tone. With the Lester G, Electro-Harmonix condenses this "big wooden cabinet" spirit into a pedal format, while adding tools tailored for guitar: dedicated compression and overdrive to capture the grain and presence of a pushed cabinet amp.

Within the lineup, the Lester G positions itself as a very complete solution: it doesn't just imitate the rotation, it also helps you hold notes and bring out the effect in a mix, exactly where a traditional rotary becomes magical.

Who is it for, which styles, and in what context?

The Lester G is aimed at guitarists who want a credible rotary speaker without the hassle, from intermediate to pro level. It excels in blues and vintage rock (breathing rhythms, singing leads), in psyche and classic rock (60s/70s style swirl), but also in ambient and post-rock when placed before delay and reverb.

Live, its Slow/Fast management and adjustable acceleration allow adapting the effect to each song, with transitions that remain musical even on a compact pedalboard. In the studio, the stereo output is ideal for widening the guitar without drowning it: the movement naturally places itself in the space.

Controls, modes, and features: a true "cabinet" under your foot

The Lester G combines three essential building blocks: rotation, compression, and drive. On the rotation side, you have two speeds, Slow and Fast, each adjustable, and an Acceleration control to define the transition speed between them. The result: you can go from a wide, smooth chorale to a faster, edgier rotation, with a ramp that is either gradual or very responsive depending on the song.

The drive section is controlled by the Drive knob, designed to simulate the behavior of a cabinet amp starting to saturate: perfect for adding bite to attacks, slightly dirtying the rotation, or creating a thick lead without losing the movement. Compression is adjusted via Attack and Sustain, with an additional "Squash" switch to toggle between a more natural compression and a more pronounced version, ideal for achieving that generous organ-style sustain.

Finally, the Balance control allows fine-tuning the mix between the bass rotor and the treble horn: a key point for adapting the pedal to your amp (or a stereo setup), and for deciding whether you want a rounder rotation or a brighter, more defined one. An expression jack completes the setup for real-time foot control of the rotation speed.

Sound

The Lester G delivers a "living" modulation: you get that sensation of air movement and depth typical of rotary speakers, with a bass that rotates broadly and a treble that adds detail and projection. In Slow mode, the guitar takes on a wide, choral, and silky character that highlights chords and arpeggios. In Fast mode, the effect becomes more incisive, close to a Doppler tremolo that gives a swirling feel to rhythms and incredible energy to riffs.

Compression is a real plus: it helps hold notes and makes the effect more obvious, especially on single-coil pickups or clean tones. Add some Drive, and you get a more "amplified" rotation, with a grain reminiscent of a pushed cabinet, without losing clarity. In stereo, the sound becomes particularly enveloping, perfect for modern textures as well as vintage vibes.
