A "Muff" crafted for big modern sounds
Released in 2006, the Metal Muff with Top Boost reflects Electro-Harmonix's intent to offer a distortion dedicated to guitarists seeking a powerful, tight, and cutting sound without sacrificing the ability to finely shape the mids. Whereas some metal distortions impose a very specific EQ curve, the Metal Muff emphasizes spectral sculpting: you retain control over the body (Bass), impact and mix placement (Mid), and definition (Treble), with the bonus of a Top Boost footswitch to "open" the sound whenever desired.
For whom, which styles, and in what contexts?
The Metal Muff is aimed at guitarists who want a metal distortion pedal that is simple to use but flexible enough to cover several subgenres: hard rock, heavy, thrash, modern metal, aggressive stoner, and anything requiring tight palm-mutes and good clarity. It performs very well with low tunings and high-output pickups, and can also suit band settings thanks to its effective mid control.
In practice, you can use it as a lead channel on a clean amp, as the main distortion on a pedalboard, or as a booster: lower the Distortion, raise the Volume (and/or engage the Top Boost) to push an already crunchy amp and gain attack. Both in studio and live, it excels whenever a massive sound that stays present in the mix is needed.
Controls, switches, and design: straightforward, effective, musical
The Metal Muff keeps it simple with clear ergonomics: a pair of Distortion/Volume knobs to adjust gain and level, a very usable 3-band EQ, and a separate Top Boost circuit (dedicated potentiometer + footswitch) to instantly switch from a dense rhythm to a sharper lead tone. The EQ offers generous adjustment ranges (up to 14 dB on bass, 15 dB on mids, 10 dB on treble), allowing compensation for a dark amp, taming an overly bright guitar, or conversely making a rhythm part cut through a busy mix.
On the practical side, there are two footswitches (bypass and Top Boost) with LEDs, mono operation via 6.35mm Jack, and a buffered bypass with high input impedance, useful for preserving clarity on long cable/pedal chains.
The sound
The Metal Muff delivers a dense and snappy distortion, with a feeling of reserve under the pick: it responds quickly, grabs attacks well, and remains clear even when the gain is cranked. The EQ is a real strong point: scooping the mids slightly yields a modern and "wide" sound; boosting them brings the guitar immediately back to the center of the mix, perfect for riffs in a band context.
The Top Boost adds extra presence in a targeted high-frequency range, ideal for bringing a solo forward without necessarily increasing the overall volume drastically. The result: a metal distortion capable of being cutting without becoming harsh, and sufficiently adjustable to match your guitar, amp, and tuning. This pedal is found in setups of artists with varied styles, proof of its versatility whenever big tone and cut are needed.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Metal Muff suitable for low tunings and high-output pickups?
This pedal is designed to retain tight palm-mutes with low tunings and high-output pickups. Its 3-band EQ allows adjustment of bass, midrange, and treble to match the amplifier used.
How does the Top Boost function work?
A dedicated footswitch activates the Top Boost, indicated by an LED. The Top Boost knob controls the amount of presence to make lead parts stand out without significantly increasing the overall volume.
Can it be used with a clean amplifier?
It can be used as a lead channel or main distortion in front of a clean amp. The Distortion control sets the gain, while the Volume provides up to +18 dB of output gain. With reduced Distortion and high Volume, the pedal can drive an already crunchy amp.
What type of bypass and connections does it have?
The signal goes through a buffered bypass with a 1 MΩ input impedance. The audio is mono, with a 6.35 mm jack input and output, and a 600 Ω output impedance.
What power supply is required for this pedal?
The pedal requires a 9 V battery or a 9.6 V DC center-negative adapter capable of delivering 200 mA; the power supply is not included.
