What you need to know
- "Studio" Compression in an Ultra-Compact Format : designed to provide true dynamic control without sacrificing space on the pedalboard.
- Two Modes to Choose From (Compressor / Limiter) to switch from musical smoothing to stricter peak control.
- Selectable Hard Knee / Soft Knee : sharp and "punchy" attack or smoother, more gradual transition.
- Blend for Parallel Compression : retain the attack and character of your instrument while adding sustain and consistency.

From the "Full-Size" Platform to the Pico Series: Studio DNA Without the Bulk
The Pico Platform carries forward the core idea of the Platform Stereo: delivering controlled, clean, and effective dynamics with a more "studio" approach than many vintage-style compressors. Electro-Harmonix has concentrated the essentials into a Pico-sized enclosure, preserving the strengths of the concept: very transparent behavior, two processing modes (compression and limiting), and a "knee" setting that radically changes the feel under your fingers.
Positioned within the NYC DSP / Pico Series family, the Pico Platform targets musicians seeking a professional tool that is simple to adjust and immediately usable both live and in the studio.
Who Is the Pico Platform For, and In Which Styles Does It Make a Difference?
The Pico Platform is suited equally for guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, or any instrument-level source: it excels whenever you need to stabilize the level, extend sustain, and make playing more consistent without changing the instrument's personality. In funk, country, pop, worship, indie, or blues, it can become an "always-on" pedal to smooth out string inconsistencies and secure attacks.
In rock and heavier contexts, it helps to tighten palm mutes, bring a riff forward in the mix, or keep a lead well-controlled. And if you play live, the Limiter mode is very handy for taming peaks (strong attacks, slap, denser choruses) and improving playing comfort, especially with amps or simulations sensitive to dynamics.
Features and Controls: Simple on the Surface, Precise in Use
Electro-Harmonix opted for a clear control panel: Volume (overall output level), Sustain (which acts differently depending on the mode), Attack (speed of the processing), and Blend (dry/wet mix). The last one makes the pedal particularly versatile: you can push compression for sustain while reinjecting the direct signal to preserve attack and "touch."
The Type button switches between Compressor and Limiter (green/orange LED). A long press accesses the Hard Knee / Soft Knee selection: Hard Knee is more pronounced, ideal for a clear control effect, while Soft Knee is more gradual and natural. The setting is saved, allowing you to "set and forget."
Regarding integration, the Pico Platform uses a buffered bypass : a plus for maintaining clarity on loaded pedalboards or long cable runs. Note: the pedal must be powered to pass the signal, even in bypass, which is typical of a buffered design.
Sound Character
The Pico Platform's character is primarily transparent : it aims to control dynamics without adding obvious coloration or artificially boosting certain frequencies. With a relatively slow Attack and a well-balanced Blend, you get compression that "holds" the sound while letting the playing breathe, perfect for clean rhythms, arpeggios, and fingerstyle parts.
By increasing Sustain, the pedal can move toward a more "squishy" feel (more pronounced compression), very useful for making a slide sing, adding body to a 12-string, or making a lead easier to sustain. In Limiter mode, it becomes a discipline tool: it rounds off peaks and helps achieve a more consistent level without the impression of the sound being crushed messily.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Electro-Harmonix Pico Platform suitable for bass?
Its 6.35 mm TS jack input accepts instrument-level sources, allowing use with a bass. The 2.2 MΩ input impedance maintains proper matching with this type of signal.
How do the compressor and limiter modes work?
The Type selector activates compression or limiting, indicated by a green or orange LED respectively. In Limiter mode, the Sustain control lowers the threshold: processing occurs earlier with a very high ratio.
Can the attack of the playing be preserved with heavy compression?
The Blend knob mixes the dry signal with the processed signal to retain some attack. A slower Attack setting also lets the note beginnings breathe more.
Hard Knee or Soft Knee: what is the difference on this pedal?
A long press selects a Hard Knee curve for a more defined control or a Soft Knee curve for a smoother action. The choice is remembered after adjustment.
What power supply is required for the Pico Platform?
This pedal requires a 9 V DC center-negative power supply and draws 100 mA. An Electro-Harmonix 9.6 V DC / 200 mA adapter is included, and the supply voltage must not exceed 10.5 V DC. The bypass is buffered and the signal does not pass when the pedal is unpowered.
