This volume highlights Franz Liszt's fascinating "Mephistophelean vein," nourished by his interest in Faust and intensified by the influence of Hector Berlioz's "Faustian" compositions. Liszt explores this theme over several decades, juxtaposing lyricism and satire, seduction and rhythmic vertigo, with a pianistic language as theatrical as it is strikingly effective.
The chronology of these works illuminates their diversity. In an initial period (between 1856 and 1862 ), Liszt composed the Faust Symphony and Zwei Episoden aus Lenaus Faust, from which comes the famous tavern scene " Dance in the Village Tavern," also known as the First Mephisto Waltz. Liszt produced various versions (orchestra, piano four hands and two pianos), reflecting the importance he placed on this material.
The other pieces of the cycle belong to Liszt's late maturity (between 1880 and 1885 ): Second Mephisto Waltz (1880-1881), Third Mephisto Waltz and Mephisto Polka (1883), Fourth Mephisto Waltz (1885), and the Fifth Mephisto Waltz, subtitled " Bagatelle without Tonality," probably also from 1885. Collected here, these pages offer a captivating journey through late Liszt, where the writing becomes freer, sometimes bolder, while retaining the momentum of dance and the spirit of Mephisto.
