A Fireball Preamp Designed for Modern Setups, from Studio to Live

The ENGL EP635 Fireball IR continues the legacy of the high-gain tones that made ENGL famous: a sharp attack, surgical definition, and a feeling of total control, even when pushing the gain. The idea is simple: to capture the "Fireball" spirit in a compact format, ready to integrate into a pedalboard, a silent recording setup, or a live rig oriented towards direct-to-PA use.

Thanks to its IR speaker simulation section, this pedal is not limited to an additional "drive": it acts as a true core of the signal chain, capable of delivering a finished and usable sound without a traditional amplifier, while retaining the dynamics and bite expected from a preamp dedicated to modern distortions.

Who Is It For? Tight Metal Rhythms to Leads That Cut Through the Mix

The EP635 Fireball IR is primarily aimed at guitarists seeking a clean, tight, and clear distorted sound: modern metal, heavy, hard rock, punk hardcore, and all styles where palm-mute precision and note separation matter. The two channels allow you to build a coherent "rhythm/lead" pair: one channel drier and more articulated for riffs, and a second channel set for more sustain or volume.

In rehearsal and on stage, it easily fits into a minimalist pedalboard approach (guitar > EP635 > PA/interface), or into a more complete chain with modulation effects, delay, and reverb. At home, the headphone output makes practicing easier without sacrificing the character of a true high-gain tone. In the studio, it becomes a quick option for recording consistent distorted guitars, with a tone immediately usable in a dense mix.

Controls, Channels, and Speaker Simulation: The Workflow of a True Preamp

The Fireball IR is designed as a full preamp: each channel has its own controls, allowing you to separately optimize gain level, volume, and EQ according to your guitar, pickups (passive or active humbuckers), and tuning. The EQ offers an efficient approach to quickly sculpt the spectrum: firm bass without muddiness, adjustable mids for mix placement, and treble/presence to manage attack and bite.

The Midboost is a key feature: footswitch-activated, it helps your leads stand out without necessarily increasing volume excessively, emphasizing the most "useful" frequency range in a band setting. The built-in noise gate quickly becomes essential once you enter high gain levels: it tightens silences, limits unwanted feedback, and keeps clean cutoffs, particularly appreciated on fast, staccato rhythms.

Regarding speaker simulation, the pedal offers an IR section with an IR Output on/off switch : convenient for adapting the output to your setup. With IR enabled, you aim for a "mic on cabinet" sound suitable for live, recording, and headphone use. With IR disabled, you can consider using it in a context where cabinet simulation is already handled elsewhere in the chain.

The Sound

The sonic signature of the ENGL EP635 Fireball IR is characterized by high definition and a typical tightness of modern distortions: chords remain clear, lows are controlled, and the attack retains sharpness even with generous gain settings. The mids are an essential lever: scooping them yields a more "scooped" and massive sound for heavy riffs; boosting them (or via the Midboost) increases presence to cut through a dense mix.

The dynamics are designed for modern playing: punchy palm-mutes, fast pick movements, and rhythmic precision. The noise gate, when well set, keeps a clean output without unnecessarily choking sustain, while presence helps adjust bite depending on the guitar and monitoring system (stage monitor, interface, headphones). In short, a performance-oriented preamp that favors clarity and efficiency, with the advantage of integrated speaker simulation for a ready-to-use sound.
