Historical context and positioning in the range
The EVH 5150 Iconic series was created to deliver the sonic DNA of modern 5150s in a more accessible format, without sacrificing the essentials: fiery gain, a tight low end, and a response tailored for modern playing. Inspired by the heritage of the EVH 5150III, this Iconic combo captures the "plug and play" spirit of performance-oriented amps: plug in, dial in, and immediately get usable tones for rehearsal, studio, or stage.
Who this amp is for
The 5150 Iconic 40W 1x12 is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists who want a tube combo capable of handling low tunings, fast palm-mutes, and dense saturation while maintaining definition. It is well suited for rehearsal and stage use (40W tube power with boost for leads), and it is also formidable for recording thanks to its emulated XLR DI. Style-wise, it excels in hard rock, metal, modern rock, shred, and all variants where articulation and gain reserve make the difference.

Questions frequently asked
Is the EVH 5150 Iconic 40W EL34 suitable for metal and low tunings?
Thanks to its two EL34 power tubes and its Red channel with Burn mode, this combo delivers modern distortion with a sharp attack. The noise gate dedicated to channel 2 helps maintain tight stops even with high gain.
Can this 40W combo amp be played at reduced volume?
A switch reduces the power to 1/4, allowing the amp to be driven harder at a controlled volume. The rated power remains 40 W. Independent Gain and Volume controls on each channel enable level balancing.
How to record the 5150 Iconic 40W EL34 live?
The emulated XLR DI output allows a direct connection to a recording system or PA, with the option to mute the power amp.
What connectivity is available for a footswitch and effects?
A 6.35 mm jack connection is provided for a footswitch. The effects loop allows placing delays, reverbs, or modulations after the preamp distortion.
Can an external speaker cabinet be connected to this EVH amp?
Two 6.35 mm jack speaker outputs wired in parallel are available, with selectable impedance of 4, 8, or 16 ohms. The combo already includes a 12-inch EVH Celestion Custom speaker, housed in an MDF enclosure with a plywood baffle.
