A Revisited "EP Type" Preamp: Vintage Spirit with More Control

The Tape Preamp was born from an educational project "FX Teacher": the initial idea was to design a very simple boost, easy to understand and handle in masterclasses. However, the chosen starting point was no ordinary one: the famous transistor preamp of an American tape echo produced between 1970 and 1991, which became a studio and stage reference for thickening the signal and driving an amp input.

Where some modern interpretations turn this circuit into a very tame clean boost, Anasounds embraces the coloration: you find the warm, grainy, and "tape" character of the original preamp, with a more flexible approach thanks to the headroom adjustment and precise work on the low end.

Who Is the Tape Preamp For? From Subtle Boost to Preamp That "Drives" the Amp

The Tape Preamp is aimed at guitarists (beginners and advanced alike) who want to improve their touch and playing feel as much as volume. In blues, rock, indie, pop, stoner, or even more ambient contexts, it serves as a "glue": a preamp that adds body, thickens the mids, and makes attacks more musical.

On a pedalboard, it is ideal at the end of distortion chains to sculpt the signal before the amp, or before a delay pedal to regain a more lo-fi and filtered vibe in the repeats. Live, it helps the guitar stand out without excessively raising the volume; in the studio, it brings an immediately "record-ready" signature.

The Tape Preamp focuses on straightforward ergonomics, but each control has a real range. The Louder potentiometer manages the overall level while also affecting the preamp gain: at low settings, you get subtle coloration; as you increase it, the pedal can move toward richer saturation, ideal for driving an amp or preamp input.

The Dynamic potentiometer is the heart of the concept: it adjusts the headroom (via an internal voltage variation), which changes the dynamic reserve and the feel under the fingers. At high headroom, the sound remains open and responsive; at low headroom, you get more pronounced compression, a "crushed" feel, and that very inspiring sag sensation, like a small tube amp pushed hard.

Finally, the 3-position Bass switch allows you to dose the lows: perfect for adapting the boost to a combo already generous in the low end, or conversely to maintain a thick foundation when playing through a drier amp. Note: as with many vintage circuits, slight noise may appear when turning the potentiometers; once the setting is in place, operation returns to perfectly stable.

The Tape Preamp stands out by its organic thickness and an immediately recognizable "vintage" grain. It is not a pedal that merely increases volume: it adds texture, harmonic depth, and a very musical way of linking the guitar to the amp. Depending on the Dynamic setting, you can go from a tight, almost "velcro"-like and quirky preamp saturation to a wide and expressive boost that respects the attack and highlights both chordal and single-note playing.
