The Essentials to Know About the Gibson 1939 J-55 Guitar

  • Advanced Jumbo Round-Shoulder Body: a generously sized Gibson acoustic, designed for power and projection.

  • Thermally Aged Adirondack Red Spruce Top: quick response, wide dynamics, and a "played-in" character from the very first notes.

  • Long 64.7 cm (25.5") Scale Length: firmer tension, well-controlled bass, and excellent attack definition.

  • Ebony Fingerboard and Bridge + Wide 44.95 mm (1.77") Nut: premium feel, comfort for fingerstyle playing, and right-hand precision.

A Legendary Gibson Jumbo Revisited by the Custom Shop

At its release, the J-55 was part of Gibson's tradition of round-shoulder acoustics and was among the Jumbo guitars offered in the 1930s. Highly sought after over the decades, the Gibson 1939 J-55 Custom Shop captures this vintage spirit with a selection of premium woods and distinctive details, such as the Moustache bridge and the "firestripe" terraced pickguard.

For Which Guitarists and Styles?

This Gibson is primarily aimed at intermediate to expert guitarists who want an acoustic inspired by the golden years, with responsiveness and real presence. It excels in strumming (folk, Americana, acoustic rock) thanks to its volume reserve, yet remains very convincing in fingerstyle due to the wide 44.95 mm (1.77") nut and the clarity provided by the long scale length.

Sound

The thermally aged Adirondack red spruce top delivers a clear attack, lots of headroom (it handles high volume without distortion), and a mature tone from the start. The mahogany body promotes rich, direct mids, with firm bass and clear trebles, helping the guitar stay articulate in a mix. The more generous Advanced Jumbo body contributes to projection and fullness, while the ebony fingerboard and bridge add precision and quick response, ideal for pick attacks as well as finger nuances.
