The Essentials to Know About the Gibson SG Standard '61 Guitar

  • Authentic "1961" Look: SG mahogany body with deeply sculpted bevels, 5-ply "tear drop" pickguard, and neck joint providing full access to all 22 frets.

  • Fast Playing Comfort: mahogany neck with a SlimTaper profile and Indian rosewood fingerboard with binding for a smooth and precise feel.

  • Vintage Big Grain, More Bite: two 60s Burstbucker humbuckers delivering classic SG character, with enhanced output and top-end brightness.

  • Premium Hardware: ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge, aluminum stopbar tailpiece, meticulous wiring with Orange Drop capacitors, and included hard case.

An SG in the Spirit of Its Origins: The "Standard '61" Reference

When the Les Paul model was paused in 1961, Gibson evolved the design toward a thinner, more cutting solid body: the SG. The SG Standard '61 follows this direct lineage, adopting the aesthetic and ergonomic codes of the era while offering "custom colors" finishes that subtly modernize the iconic silhouette.

For Whom and Which Styles?

The Gibson SG Standard '61 is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists seeking an expressive, lively, and instantly inspiring electric guitar. Its balance and access to high notes make it a natural ally for rock, blues, hard rock, and pop, with enough responsiveness for sharp riffs as well as singing solos. The SlimTaper profile will especially appeal to those looking for a fast grip, ideal for precise rhythm playing and speedy leads.

The Sound

The combination of a mahogany body and mahogany neck delivers the classic SG signature: rich mids, a clear attack, and natural sustain, with an immediate responsiveness under the fingers. The two 60s Burstbucker humbuckers provide a vintage-voiced tone but with increased presence: the neck pickup remains full and warm for bluesy licks and full chords, while the bridge pickup adds bite and definition to cut through a mix. The 2 Volume and 2 Tone electronics, combined with hand-wired circuitry and Orange Drop capacitors, allow for smooth and musical adjustments-perfect for transitioning from dynamic crunch to a rounder tone without losing expressiveness.
