The Essentials to Know About the Gibson SG Standard Guitar
- Late '60s SG Spirit: legendary ergonomics and an iconic look, featuring a full-face 5-ply black pickguard.
- 100% Mahogany Base (body and neck): warm response and naturally singing sustain.
- Gibson 490R and 490T Pickups: an Alnico II duo that is both powerful, expressive, and very versatile.
- Robust Hardware: aluminum Tune-O-Matic Nashville bridge and stopbar tailpiece, Grover Rotomatic tuners.
An SG Standard in the Tradition of the Sought-After Late Sixties Models
The Gibson SG Standard follows the codes that made late '60s SGs famous: simple and effective luthiery, a mahogany neck with a rounded profile, and a rosewood fingerboard. The long tenon neck joint extending to the 19th fret enhances the sense of continuity between neck and body, resulting in a responsive, lively guitar that is especially enjoyable when cranking the amp.
For Which Guitarists and Styles?
Designed for intermediate to advanced guitarists (while remaining accessible if you are a serious beginner), this SG excels whenever character is needed: rock, hard rock, blues, punk, indie, edgy pop, and even more modern genres when adjusting volumes and tones. Its SG format also favors standing play and access to high notes, ideal for solos and licks high up the neck.
The Sound
The combination of a solid mahogany body and mahogany neck delivers a dense tonal signature, with well-present mids and generous sustain. The 490R (neck) and 490T (bridge) humbuckers, magnetized with Alnico II, offer a smooth attack and rich harmonic content: rounded, singing leads at the neck; a sharper grain at the bridge that easily cuts through the mix. The 2 volume and 2 tone controls allow fine sculpting of dynamics, from crisp clean to thick crunch, up to more pronounced overdrive.
