A Model Born from the Archives: The Ted McCarty Spirit at the Heart of the Custom Shop
The Theodore Standard is an atypical Gibson, directly stemming from a project long kept on paper. Designed from 1957 sketches and annotations, it fits within a "heritage" approach that highlights the brand's history while offering very modern ergonomics. Produced only in a limited series at the Custom Shop, it stands out both by its Theodore silhouette and scimitar-shaped headstock and by a design thought for playability, with balanced lines and an immediate feel.
For Whom, and For Which Styles?
This electric guitar is aimed at intermediate to expert guitarists seeking a different Gibson, yet rooted in fundamentals: a fast SlimTaper neck, vintage-character humbuckers, and mahogany craftsmanship oriented towards sustain. It excels in blues, classic rock, vintage hard rock, and jazz (round tone on the neck pickup), while remaining expressive enough for sharper sounds on the bridge side.
The Sound
The combination of mahogany body + mahogany neck promotes a dense response, present mids, and natural sustain, while the Indian rosewood fingerboard delivers a softer attack and a sense of control in the upper spectrum. The 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus humbuckers provide a tone inspired by vintage pickups: breadth, definition, and dynamics, with extra bite and output level on the bridge for riffs and solos. The Master Volume and Master Tone controls, combined with manual wiring and Orange Drop capacitors, allow effective shaping of brightness and warmth, whether you play clean, crunch, or saturated.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
