A Faithful Reissue of the Hawaiian "Weissenborn" Tradition
Herman Weissenborn's Hawaiian steel guitars, made before World War II, stood out for their unique lutherie and instantly recognizable sound. Gold Tone based their design on the study of these vintage instruments to offer a modern Weissenborn that respects the essentials: the body and the hollow neck, serving great resonance. The Gold Tone Weissenborn GT thus represents an affordable entry point into this legendary format, featuring a satin natural finish and reliable hardware.
Who Is It For, and In Which Styles?
This Gold Tone Weissenborn is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists (or motivated beginners) who want to explore lap steel / Hawaiian playing with a slide (bar). It excels in blues, folk, americana, country, and cinematic atmospheres-anywhere rich open chords, drones, and enveloping sustain are sought. A crucial point: the Weissenborn requires respecting appropriate tunings and string gauges to preserve the bridge, bracing, and neck.
Sound
The combination of sapelli top, back, and sides promotes a warm and balanced tone, with expressive mids and beautiful depth, particularly flattering in open tunings. The hollow neck design enhances the sense of resonance and provides the typical "airy" character: a soft attack, wide projection, and sustain that highlights slide glides and vibratos. This guitar is designed to make harmonies sing, with a very musical response as soon as the strings are allowed to breathe.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
To stay within the intended use, prioritize strings suited for Weissenborn playing and the recommended open tunings. The supplied strings are gauged .014, .018, .026w, .034w, .044w, .056w and are intended for tuning in G (DGDGBD), D (DADF#AD), and similar tunings.
