A "Classic Revisited": The PRE-73 Spirit Optimized for the 500 Series Format

The PRE-573 MKIII carries forward the sound and philosophy that made the PRE-73 family successful, with a design intended to integrate naturally into an API 500 series chassis. It features a transformer-based audio path, based on the preamp and output sections of the "classic 1073," to achieve that warm, slightly saturable, and very musical signature when pushing the input stage.

Compared to older versions focused on "pure preamp," this MKIII variant adds more modern tools for today's studio: a 2-stage high-pass filter to clean the recording at the source, a AIR mode to open up the high frequencies, and a switchable passive/active DI section whose active circuit follows the same spirit as the PRE-73 DLX, with a signal path designed to preserve personality.

Who and What For: Recording, Characterful Reamping, and Studio-Ready DI

The PRE-573 MKIII targets demanding home studios, production studios, and engineers seeking a 500 series mic preamp capable of delivering a true signature without sacrificing flexibility. It suits vocals, acoustic guitars, snares, overheads, brass, or ambiences whenever you want substance and a "console" feel.

Thanks to the line input mode, the module can also be used to color signals that are already preamplified or come from a converter, sampler, or synth: you get the circuit's grain with a gain structure better suited to line levels. Finally, the DI input (especially in active mode) is designed to capture high-impedance instruments with precise attack while maintaining an organic texture that sits easily in the mix.

Key Features: Gain, Impedances, Filter, and AIR to Shape the Source

Gain Management: From Transparency to Drive

The PRE-573 MKIII offers a very wide gain range, rated up to +80 dB, with typical "staged" operation. The main zone (about 20 to 70 dB) is adjusted via a rotary switch for quick and consistent recall, while a separate toggle switch adds extra gain (5 or 10 dB) when the source demands it. This approach also facilitates gain staging: you can dial in the input for character, then adjust the overall level to drive a converter without clipping.

Mic or Line: True Impedance Adaptation

In mic mode, the input impedance is switchable (1200 or 300 ohms), a useful setting to influence interaction with certain dynamic and ribbon mics, thus affecting presence or thickness. In line mode, the input can be configured to accept line-level signals: the gain is reduced by about 30 dB and the input impedance rises to around 10 kohms, which helps preserve dynamics and avoid unnecessary amplification.

Passive/Active DI: Two Approaches, One Goal

For instruments, the DI input offers a passive/active choice. In active mode, you benefit from a high input impedance (around 1.5 Mohms) to respect passive pickups' signal and retain transient detail. A notable feature: the active DI signal then passes through the input transformer, adding character and sonic coherence with mic recordings.

2-Stage High-Pass Filter and AIR Mode: Better Recording, Faster

The 2-stage high-pass filter manages vibrations, plosives, mic stand noise, or proximity effect right at capture. The AIR mode adds a sense of openness in the high frequencies, useful for adding air to a vocal, brightening an acoustic guitar, or helping a DI track stand out without immediately resorting to EQ.
