Summary of This Score
Many musicians are still unaware: Beethoven not only wrote a Violin Concerto that has become indispensable, but he also offered a version for piano (Op. 61a). This adaptation originated from a request from London: Clementi, composer and publisher, informed of the concerto's premiere, asked Beethoven for a transcription intended for pianists. The piano version was indeed published in 1808, opening access to this great repertoire piece from a completely different perspective, both more intimate and strikingly revealing.
This transcription is not a simple "reduction": it rethinks the musical material for the keyboard while preserving the concertante dimension of the work. Beethoven also adds new cadenzas, particularly striking. The cadenza of the first movement stands out for its imagination and bold character, with an unusual and cleverly written effect: the timpani accompaniment, which brings an unexpected orchestral color and heightens the dramatic tension. For the pianist, it is a highly formative work on projection, phrasing, articulation, and endurance, while offering intense musical pleasure.
