Summary of This Score
Johannes Brahms showed early interest in the violin sonata: as early as 1853, he composed a Sonata in A minor which is now lost, probably discarded due to his legendary exacting standards. The Sonata in G major op. 78 (1878-1879) is thus considered his first preserved contribution to the genre. Its last movement, featuring a quotation from a lied, popularized the nickname "Regenlied" ("Rain Song"), anchoring the work in an intimate poetry typical of Brahms in his maturity.
The summer of 1886 then marked an exceptional creative surge: Brahms composed almost simultaneously the Sonatas op. 100 (A major) and op. 108 (D minor). Contrasting and complementary, they offer the violin-piano duo a complete expressive palette, from the most lyrical cantilena to more dramatic and virtuosic passages. Together, these three sonatas constitute an ideal journey to deepen the Brahmsian style: solid architecture, harmonic density, demanding chamber music writing, and constant dialogue between the two partners.
The volume is completed by the Scherzo in C minor, Brahms's contribution to the famous F.A.E. Sonata (1853), collectively composed alongside Robert Schumann and Albert Dietrich for the violinist Joseph Joachim. With its marked contrasts between a fiery Allegro and a more lyrical "Più moderato," this Scherzo is often performed as a brilliant piece or encore. This new edition, prepared by Bernd Wiechert and Michael Struck, is based on the new complete edition of Brahms and offers reliable working material, complemented by fingerings from true masters.
