Summary of This Score

Composed in the summer of 1892, probably alongside the Intermezzi op. 117 during Johannes Brahms' stay in Bad Ischl (Salzkammergut), the "Fantaisies op. 116" belong to those late piano pages where one finds deep melancholy, but also a great variety of atmospheres. Whereas other late opus numbers favor a more homogeneous color, this cycle stands out by its play of contrasts and characters, alternating moments of reverie and intimacy with more nervous and ardent outbursts.

The score offers seven brief, finely crafted, and intensely expressive pieces: four Intermezzi, described as "dreamy" according to Clara Schumann, and three Capricci "deeply passionate." This alternation makes op. 116 particularly lively both in concert and in practice, and makes it an excellent resource for developing sound palette, voice layering, legato, articulation, and rubato management in the Romantic style.

Accessible to pianists of intermediate to advanced level, this collection allows entry into the heart of Brahms' writing: harmonic richness, polyphonic density, inner voices to be made to sing, and finely graduated dynamics. The edition is based on a revised musical text from the new complete edition of the works, ensuring reliable and coherent work, whether for study, examination, or program preparation.
